What exactly is a value? The word is generally understood to mean the qualities of life you find important to maintain both your emotional and physical well-being.
When we find ourselves feeling ill at ease, this is often because we’re living in a way that is out of sync with our core values. Knowing your values can be the foundation to understanding yourself. Your values can also help serve as a road map for your life and will aid you in making the best decisions for yourself. By interacting with this list you’ll always have something to guide you.
So how can you figure out what your values are? It can be tricky and I work long and hard with my clients on this, so in addition to the exercise below I would like to gift you the chapter on ‘Values’ from my book ‘Give YourSelf Permission to Live Your Life’. It will give you a deeper understanding of values. Just go tot he contact page and send an email to me (Priya) and put “Free Values Chapter” at the top. I will send you a PDF of it ASAP!
SO here we go, try this exercise on for size:
Which Films have Inspired You Most?
A private way to start exploring what your values can be to list five (5) films that have inspired you over the years. Once you’ve identified the films, make a list of the qualities that you relate to in each film.
eg: The Blind Side: resilience, persistence, love, family
If films aren’t your thing, try using TV shows, books, songs, cities, countries or whatever touches you the most as a prompt.
(When you get the free chapter you will also get my list of films and values!)
Now take a look at your list. Do any of the qualities resonate with you? Could any be your values? From here try and come up with a list of your TOP 5 Values.
Once you have your values list ask yourself if you are living by them. If you aren’t, explore how you can start incorporating them.
For much more information on values and ways on how to use them to your advantage, please just get in touch from the contact page and ask for the free chapter!
